Happy Friday to you all!

Today we have had a lovely day in Year 3/4. We have all been wearing our Christmas Jumpers and making festive hats for our Christmas Party Bag lunch. Plenty of excitement going on at Down Hall Primary School.

Zoom Calls
It was so lovely to speak to you on Monday and Tuesday. Our deepest apologies for the Zoom hosts letting us down. We can assure you that it was a programme glitch and no fault of our own. We were able to fix this very quickly and appreciate your flexibility in our moment of need! Looking forward to seeing you all in person in 2021 (fingers crossed!)

Friday 4th December 2020 Y 3/4 Blog

Dear Parents,

Where did that week just go? It's been a super busy one and the children are all trying hard and are showing more positive and independent learning behaviours. We have been doing assessments over the last few days. We are currently analysing these and will be using the results of these tests to inform us of what the children are really good at and what we need to be working on in order to close any gaps in the children's learning. To this end, next week we will be sending these papers home. We would like you to look through these assessments with your child and use them to assist you in helping your child.

COLD WEATHER

Due to the nature of the current weather, could you please ensure your child comes dressed appropriately to school? Hats, coats, gloves and scarves are needed. All windows and doors must remain open in our classrooms. It is Government guidance that we must all follow. We do it so that we have constant airflow into the classroom, lessening the risk of spreading infection. We have all had to wear extra layers of clothing to counteract this. The children may benefit from wearing an extra layer under their uniform.

ZOOM PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

Thank you to all of you for signing up to discuss how your child is settling into school this term. Obviously we would prefer to hold face to face meetings but due to current restrictions this is not possible. The next best thing would be to hold a Zoom conference. We are looking forward to discussing your child's learning journey with you. Please find details on how to sign up on our school weekly newsletter.

HOMEWORK

We hope your child was able to mark their maths homework. The answers are uploaded on to our Google Classroom page every Thurday at 3.30pm. If there are any issues, please email your child's class teacher. This weeks maths homework is as follows:

Page numbers - Written Subtraction

Y3 pg 21     Y4  pg 19

FRIDAY 11th DECEMBER - Xmas Jumper Day

Next Friday we would love the children to wear their Christmas jumper to school. We will be raising funds to support our sponsored child, Thoko. Please can you bring in some gold coins to drop in the bucket? Thank you for your generosity.

Here is a message from Thoko.

My community benefits from sponsorship from people like you through partnership with Action Aid.  This helps me and my friends get an education.

THANK YOU FOR WEARING YOUR CHRISTMAS JUMPERS AND SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY!

Wishing you all a lovely and warm weekend. See you next week!

Friday 27th November - Year 3/4 Blogpost

Dear Parents,

We have reached the end of Week 4 and the learning this week has been magnificent.

OUR LEARNING THIS WEEK

This week in English we have all been looking at explanation texts and researching what it was like to be in the Roman Army. We will be writing these explanations and look forward to sharing some of our work with you.

In maths, we have continued looking at different ways to add and subtract. We have been primarily working on the column method and this is the basis of this week's homework.

HOMEWORK

This week's homework is scheduled to be uploaded onto Google Classroom at 3.30pm today. Thank you for sharing all your work with us. Just a reminder that only the children need to write a comment on Google Classroom. It is expected that they write a comment about their learning independently.

Thank you for encouraging your child to engage in positive learning behaviours.

MATHS HOMEWORK

As mentioned last week, your child now has a maths homework book (coming home today) that they can keep at home to work through. We will put the pages we suggest you do each week in the weekly blog and also on Google Classroom

There is a 4 page mini test at the beginning (Pages 2-5) - this is optional, do this if you wish.

At the beginning of the book is a table of contents page. These pages will indicate the work for your child to complete.

Written Addition - this week we are asking the Year 3 children to complete page 20 and the Year 4 children to complete page 18.

WHOLE SCHOOL SUMDOG COMPETITION

Calling all of you amazing mathematicians!

You have been entered into the Down Hall Primary School Sumdog Competition. It starts on November 27th at 3.30pm, and finishes at 3.30pm on December 3rd.

Why not have a go and get your class on the school leaderboard?

I will be monitoring how well each class is doing. The winning class will get extra playtime!

Let's show our school what great mathematicians we are!

Good luck.

Mrs Hurley 👍

Have a fabulous weekend and take care.

Friday 20th November 2020 - Y 3/4 Blogpost

Dear Parents,

Wishing you all a very happy Friday. It has been a very busy one here in Year 3/4.

OUR LEARNING THIS WEEK

This week we have all been writing stories on A Day in the Life of a Roman Soldier. We have been so impressed with the quality and content of these narratives. Lots of imagery and description being used. Well done!

In maths, we have bee looking at different ways to add and subtract. We have looked at bar modelling and part-whole modelling. Next week we will focus on column method.

Next week we will be sending your child home with a maths homewok book that they can keep at home to work through. We will put the pages we suggest you do each week on Google Classroom.

THE PLAN WHEN LEARNING HAS TO BE DONE AT HOME

As mentioned in both the news letter and a previous blog, this is the plan if (for whatever reason) your child has to stay at home:

As a school we will be using the DfE approved programme, The National Academy (https://www.thenational.academy/). Here there are daily lessons for each Year Group which cover a range of subjects. There are a number of other online sources that you can use to complement this site:

https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/members-area/kids/

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/primary

https://www.tate.org.uk/kids

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/

Use these websites as a means for providing home learning for your child. If a whole class has to stay at home, this plan still applies.Mrs Hurley will put a post on Google Classroom with a reminder of this on the first day of the whole bubble being off and all teachers will make email contact with you on a weekly basis.

HOWEVER, Fingers crossed we can all stay safe in school!

Take care and have a lovely weekend - ENJOY.

Friday 13th November 2020 - Y 3/4 Blogpost

 Dear Parents,

We have come to the end of another brilliant week in Year 3/4. It has absolutely flown by and we have been very impressed with how quickly the children have adapted to life in Opal, Moonstone and Garnet. It has also been lovely to see the children getting to know each other.

NEW PROJECT - THE ROMANS

This week, we have begun our new project, The Romans, by learning about what it was like to be a Roman soldier and also the countries that the Romans invaded. We are going to be completing some narrative writing about this. Watch this space...

HOMEWORK

This week's homework has been uploaded onto Google Classroom pages. We ask that your child log's in and completes the tasks throughout the week - on Thursday we will write a comment for the children to respond to. Please read the homework post with your child and make a plan for the week. Children will also need to continue to practise their Maths using Times Tables Rock Stars and Sumdog. Could you make use of MyOn or continue to read books from home with your child? We are so sorry that we cannot send physical books home. We know it is unfortunate but please understand that we are following the guidance that has been given to us.

NEW ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

After a long wait, the children have been able to go on the new play equipment and have thoroughly enjoyed playing on it. This is a very popular addition to our school environment.

CHILDREN IN NEED
Although we are not collecting money in school this year, you can tune in to the live
Appeal this Friday to donate and to enjoy a packed show of entertainment.
If you are keen to get more involved, then follow the link below for other ways that
you can fundraise.

As always you can contact us via our email and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Hurley Mr Greenfield Miss Harvey

Friday 6 November 2020

Friday 6th November 2020 Welcome to Year 3/4 - Opal, Moonstone and Garnet Classes

Dear Parents,

A huge welcome to you if you are joining us here in Year 3/4 and a big hello if you were with us last year! The children have had a very busy week and have all settled in well to their new classes. It is so great to see the children smiling when they are coming into school each day. Well done to all the children for remembering to bring in a water bottle, a reading book from home and your coat.

HOMEWORK AND GOOGLE CLASSROOM

Google Classroom is an essential part of your child's learning journey here at Down Hall. It is a place where the children can access their homework as well as sharing any learning that they have been doing at home. This week we will not be setting any homework on Google Classroom. However, we would like you to sign in to your email and you will see that Mr Greenfield has sent you a link to your new Google Classroom. Can you please click on to the link? Answer the question that Mr Greenfield has set so we can see who has been able to gain access to your class account.

Here are the instructions on how to access our homework on Google Drive as well as some of the educational websites we use.

Google Drive

Your child has their own login for Google drive which is an email and a password. Here they can complete work on a computer, which saves automatically and are able to share this with their teacher. You can log in by googling ‘Google Drive’ and signing in. Your child needs to type their email address in and click ‘Next’ then on the next screen, they need to type their password in. These have been given to your child already to take home. If you need these please email year 3_4@downhallprimary.com.

Once signed in, your child can access school emails, shared work and homework.

Google Classroom

Within Google Drive is Google Classroom which can be accessed by clicking on the little squares near to the top right of the screen:

Scroll down to ‘Classroom’ and click on it:

Then click on ‘Y3/4 2019/20 as shown below:

(I have more as I am a member of a few groups so your child’s page may look different to mine)

All children in year 3/4 have been invited to this so your child should be able to join. If there are any problems, please let me know.

From here, your child can see other children’s comments and where some children have posted their work. If your child clicks on ‘Classwork at the top’ this will give you the homework tasks:

SUMDOG

https://www.sumdog.com/user/sign_in

Your child has also been given a Sumdog login so they can access this educational site. Your child’s teacher monitors how often your child accesses this.

MyOn

https://www.myon.co.uk/ (Make sure you go to the .co.uk site not the .com site).

Their MyOn login details are the same as their Accelerated Reader details which your child was given when they did the Star Reader test. Accelerated Reader is a reading programme that we use in school and we should hopefully be using this again, when the government guidance allows, as it involves taking books home and bringing them back into school.

Times Tables Rock Stars

https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student

Your child has been given their TTRS login details. Your child will need to type the school’s name in first and then the login page below will come up:

All children are given their login details and can usually be found in their reading record.

We would also like you to have a go at the school's official websites for maths and reading. Your child should have come in with temporary log in cards for Sumdog and TTRS. These websites are specifically targetting maths skills and times tables. If you need any help, feel free to ask your child's teacher. In the future we will be sending home a laminated sheet with all log in's and access details. Next week we will be setting homework on the Year 3/4 Google Classroom - watch this space...

Farewell from Year 3/4!

Dear Parents,

We made it! Thanks for all so much for your support. May we take this opportunity to wish you and your children a happy and restful half term. It has been an absolute pleasure to teach all of your amazing children and I know that I speak for all of us when I say we could not be more proud of them all. They are a real credit to you, your family and our wider school community.

As it is the holidays and the children will be moving on to their new classes, we will not be setting any homework. Please take the time to relax, rejuvenate and spend time together. Although,it would be good if the children could do some reading at home - either a book or Myon, whichever they feel comfortable doing. Thank you.

REMOTE EDUCATION PROVISION

As mentioned in today's newsletter, as a school we must offer immediate remote education if, for any reason, your child is not able to attend school for a prolonged period of time. As a school we will be using the DfE approved programme, The National Academy (https://www.thenational.academy/). Here there are daily lessons for each Year Group which cover a range of subjects. There are a number of other online sources that you can use to complement this site:

https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/members-area/kids/

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/primary

https://www.tate.org.uk/kids

FACE MASKS

A polite reminder to please wear a mask when you are dropping and picking up your child to school. This is in line with current Tier 2 restrictions. Thank you for your support.

OVERVIEW MEETINGS

In normal times, we would have held our Key Stage 2 Overview Meeting with parents during the summer term. Although we cannot meet up in person we have provided you all with a link to the slides that would have been presented. Bear in mind that some of these slides do not represent our normal approach (e.g. homework/reading) but please be assured we are constantly reviewing more effective procedures in what we do.

Please follow the link below to the Year 3/4 Overview Meeting slides.

Year 3/4 Overview Meeting

CONTACT OVER THE HALF TERM
Please be aware that teachers will not be replying to emails during the half term holidays. If you do email you will not receive a response until after the half term.

Wishing you all well on the next stage of your journey at Down Hall. We will miss you but look forward to hearing how well you are doing in your new classes.

Year 3/4 Blog 16th October 2020

Dear Parents,

This week in Year 3/4, the children have been busy writing poems based on two very important campaigners and sportspeople, Serena Williams and Marcus Rashford. They have worked hard to create interesting amazing free verse poems that show how much the children understand about the positive contribution of these inspirational black people.

In maths, we have been working on multiplication and division. The children have learnt a range of methods. These include grid, expanded and short multiplication. We have focused on short division. We will continue with this next week. It is crucial that the children know all their times tables. We teach children a variety of methods so that they will learn to choose the most efficient method for them.

Unfortunately, the weather has prevented us from completing all of our Daily Miles this week.  We have tried to get outside as much as possible and get some fresh air

Don't forget to remind your child that homework is on Google Classroom.  They should also be learning their spellings, times tables (don't forget Times Tables Rock Stars) and reading via MyOn. The preference is for the children to be reading a physical book. We use MyOn to supplement the children's reading. As we are unable to send books home from school, this is the alternative provision.

Any problems or you just want to pass on a message then please email us at the usual address.

year3_4@downhallprimary.com

Have a lovely weekend.

Y 3/4 Blog 09.10.20

Dear Parents

Thank you for all you and your children's amazing efforts for making it through another successful week - we hope the children have enjoyed school because they have worked extremely well together!

This week the children have been learning about the importance of Black History. They understand the important contribution that black people have made to us all and have discussed the concept of EQUALITY and EQUAL rights for all. I am so very proud of the intelligent and informed discussions that have been taking place across the classes.

HOMEWORK

Please note that homework for Year 3/4 has been uploaded to the Year 3/4 Google Classroom page. This is a menu that only changes slightly every week. Please ensure your child is accessing Sumdog, TTRS and MyOn regularly.  Alongside these tasks, children are expected to be learning the Year 3/4 spellings and times tables which are also posted on the page. Children should know their tables to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4.  Therefore, it is vital that they revise these regularly at home as well as in school.  They should be using MyOn and quizzing on what they read via Accelerated Reader.

In the meantime, if you have any concerns or you would like to know how your child has settled back into school please send us an email via our normal email address and we will get back to you.

Have a fabulous weekend, hopefully the sun will be shining for you all.

Y 3/4 Blog 2nd October

 Dear Parents

We currently live in strange times and those quick chats at the beginning and end of the day are not possible at the moment. All of you would have received reports in February about your child's progress and areas to focus upon for next steps in learning. Once new classes start next half term, there will be some form of Parent/Teacher consultation - we will let you know details nearer the time of how we can make this happen. However, in the meantime if you have any concerns or you would like to know how your child has settled back into school, please send us an email via our normal email address and we will get back to you.

This week in English we have been writing informal letters as if we are soldiers in the trenches in WWI. We are extremely pleased with how the children have embraced this topic with a true grasp and respect of what it was like to live through such testing circumstances. A big well done!

In Maths we have been loooking at using a variety of efficient methods. We would like the children to practise multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. Details of this week's homework are on the Classroom Google page.

Well done to all the children for remembering to bring in their coat each day. The weather has taken a turn for the worse so we will try and get outside when we can!

Once again, a massive thank you for all of your help and support in these challenging times. If there is anything you need, either call the school office and ask for one of us or contact us through our email:  year3_4@downhallprimary.com

Dear Parents/Carers

The children continued to work hard for their teachers this week. We are having lots of fun in Year 3/4.

Thank you so much to all the wonderful children who logged into Google Classroom and completed the set homework tasks. Please ensure your child is logged into Google and then you need to navigate your way to the Year 3/4 page - see link below.

https://classroom.google.com/u/0/c/NjU0MzMyODk1ODVa

Don't forget our PE day is a Tuesday. Well done to all the children who came to school in the correct PE kit.

Please make sure that your child brings suitable clothing for changeable weather conditions.  We need to keep windows and doors open for ventilation, so it is advisable for children to have jumpers with them every day.  Unfortunately, we are unable to issue spare items of clothing.

A gentle reminder that the children need to bring a waterproof coat in every day please.

Once again, a massive thank you for all of your help and support in these challenging times. If there is anything you need, either call the school office and ask for one of us or contact us through our email:  year3_4@downhallprimary.com

Dear Parents

The Year 3 and 4 teachers would like to say a huge well done to the all the children this week. They have all worked so hard in lessons and have done so with a smile.

We would also like to thank all parents for following the guidelines during drop off and pick ups and for sticking to the correct times.

This week, children have been continuing to take part in the Daily Mile each day.  That's 7 laps around the field!  Some walk, some jog and some try to cut corners.  It is a great opportunity to get some extra fresh air and exercise and everyone seems to be enjoying it.

With some rainy weather on its way, please could we ask that your child brings a weatherproof coat in to school? We will be going outside in our break and lunchtimes for some fresh air and don't want to see a little bit of drizzle interfere with this.

May we also remind you that the children need to bring in a water bottle, their lunch and a book to read every day. Your child should not be bringing anything else into school nor taking anything home with them.

PE is to begin next Tuesday 22nd September. Children are expected to come to school in full PE kit and trainers.

Here is a link to our Google Classroom page. Here you will find this weeks homework. You need to ensure that you are logged in to your child's Google account first.

Y 3/4 Blog - First Week Done! 👍

 Dear Parents

Wow! What a fabulous week it has been in Year 3/4! Such an amazing first day back and really lovely to see all the happy, smiley children who we have missed so dearly. We hope that your children are feeling settled and are coming home and telling you all of things that they have been up to at school. They are all genuinely a real credit to you.

This week, we have been reviewing Time in Maths. We have found that the children are not secure in telling the time and also understanding the differences between analogue and digital time. Please could you spend some time teaching your child how to tell the time? This is a skill that requires a lot of repetition.

We had fun doing a Maths quiz outside and we have also been looking at flashbacks and time travel in our English lessons. We took part in some drama sessions which were lots of fun and also a very creative way to plan a story. The children have responded so well to this concept and we are looking forward to writing our own narrative flashbacks next week.

Moonstone class welcome Miss Beard who is a student teacher and will be with us until December. Miss Beard has slotted in nicely into our class and it is as if she has always been here!

HOMEWORK

Homework will be able to be accessed from Google Classroom as of next week. This week we would like the children to produce a poster of what they like about being at school. They can use any medium they wish. Unfiortunately we are not able to accept actual posters into school so please send us a photograph or an email instead. We will print off the best one and it will be displayed on the fence at the school entrance on Down Hall Park Way. Please do not add a surname on the poster for safeguarding reaons. We cannot wait to see what is making your child happy to be back to school!

Homework due: Friday 18th September.

Please encourage your child to read a minimum of 15 minutes per day at home. Make use of Times Table Rockstars and Sumdog in order to brush up on Maths skills. MyON is a great way to read at home too!

EXTRA HOMEWORK

Why is there an extra day in a leap year? First 3 answers through the door on Monday will net you 2 housepoints each. 👍

As always, we are here to support you and if you have any questions do please drop us an email at year3_4@downhallprimary.com.

Have a fabulous and well deserved weekend!

Moonstone Opal Garnet Classes - Welcome Back!

Dear Parents

We hope you are all well and that the children are ready to return to school on Monday. We have been working very hard to get ready for your return so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read and share the guidance so that all arrangements go like clockwork. It is really important that you help us with our plan to stagger the arrival and departure of our children at the beginning and end of the day.

All children will be coming in and leaving by the Downhall Park Way entrance.Make a note of your drop off time and entrance/exit gate and please remember to keep socially distanced on your approach to and from school. We have chosen this distinct entrance as it enables us to have an entry point and exit point (like in most public buildings) to maintain social distancing and keep our community safe.

The children will only need their reading book from home, water bottles and lunch boxes (washable, of any type). As visits to the school including the office are strictly by appointment only, we would encourage parents to ensure that your child has everything they need for their school day. You can also order a school packed lunch if needed. Payments need to be made via Scopay. Please ask the school office if you need to. The menu can be found here: Lunch Menu.

As there are staggered start and finish times, a reminder that the children are due to start at:

Opal  8.45-3.10pm

Garnet 8.50-3.15pm

Moonstone 8.55-3.20pm

However if your child has an older sibling then they can start at the same time as their sibling, as all siblings start at the earliest time. Times can be found here: Start and finish times

The children will be learning a combination of objectives they would have covered in the Summer Term as well as beginning to access the Year 4 and 5 curriculum. Gaps in their knowledge will be established and planned for accordingly.

When the children arrive they will sit at their allocated seat and begin the school day with GPS. Next will be Maths and Times Table practise. After break is English and Handwriting or Basic Maths Skills. Lunch will be eaten at their table. In the afternoon we aim to have an Art or PSHE focus followed by the Daily Mile . We would ask that you bear with us as we navigate our way in a manner that is best for the children.

Please note that there will be no PE for the first 2 weeks back. Full school uniform is required.

If you have any further questions please email your class email year3_4@downhallprimary.com

and the appropriate teacher will respond accordingly.

The DfE have published guidance for parents about children returning to school. This can be found here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NMuucUKcv7mwOgWzuzJHlzMNOZhIt-gC/view
